Warrior Women

Often referred to in America as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), the distribution of knowledge and awareness of breast cancer has drastically increased since its beginnings in the mid 1980’s. Women the world over have benefited from the efforts of millions.

Unfortunately, the leading cause of breast cancer today is simply being a women; as women are at 200 times the risk of developing breast cancer than men. In fact, a woman born today has about a one in eight lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer, and if diagnosed, women are up to four times more likely to develop a new cancer in either breast. While breast cancer happens in men, it is relatively uncommon as only 2,150 men are diagnosed per year.

As a result, there are many fundraising activities one is able to take part in for this month of October; the most popular being the famous 60 mile walk sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Additionally, several National Race for the Cure events are held every year spread over hundreds of cities at a time. America isn’t the only nation to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many countries participate in similar walks and marathons around the world. It’s even become popular for countries to light up their significant landmarks in pink to honor those who suffer, and to celebrate those who have overcome.
